Frequently asked questions
What is a Unix timestamp?
▾
The number of seconds (or milliseconds) elapsed since January 1, 1970, 00:00:00 UTC — known as the Unix epoch. It's timezone-independent, making it ideal for storing and comparing dates across systems.
How do I know if my timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?
▾
Seconds timestamps are ~10 digits (e.g., 1700000000). Millisecond timestamps are ~13 digits (e.g., 1700000000000). When in doubt, check if dividing by 1000 gives a sensible date.
What is the Year 2038 problem?
▾
32-bit signed integers overflow at 2,147,483,647 seconds (January 19, 2038 03:14:07 UTC). Modern systems use 64-bit timestamps and are unaffected, but legacy embedded systems may have issues.
