Date Difference

Calculate the exact difference between two dates

About Date Difference

Counts the calendar days between two dates and restates the span as complete weeks, total hours and a breakdown in years, months and days. Both dates come from a calendar that reaches from 100 years back to ten years ahead, with no time of day involved. Handy for contract periods, project timelines, ages or the time elapsed since a release.

Frequently asked questions

How is the difference calculated?

▾

Both dates are taken at midnight and the tool counts the calendar days between them, also shown as complete weeks and total hours; the years, months and days breakdown compares the calendar fields of both dates. If the end date comes before the start date, you get the same absolute difference plus a notice that the dates are inverted.

Is the end date included in the count?

▾

No. The result is the number of days from one date to the other, so January 1 to January 2 counts as 1 day. Add 1 if you need an inclusive count that covers both the start and end dates.

Are weekends and holidays excluded?

▾

No. Every calendar day is counted, including weekends and public holidays, and there is no business-day option. Subtract non-working days yourself if you need a working-day total.

Does it account for time zones or daylight saving time?

▾

Dates are read as midnight in your local time zone, with no time zone conversion. The day count is not affected by DST, but if a clock change falls inside the range, the hours total is one hour more or less than 24 times the number of days.
