Frequently asked questions

Is this password generator cryptographically secure?

▾

Yes. It uses crypto.getRandomValues() — the browser's CSPRNG (Cryptographically Secure Pseudo-Random Number Generator) — not Math.random(). All generation happens locally in your browser.

What makes a strong password?

▾

Length matters more than complexity. A 16+ character random password from a wide character set is extremely strong. Aim for at least 12 characters for personal accounts, 20+ for sensitive systems.

Should I include special characters?

▾

Enabling symbols adds 26 characters (!@#$%^&*()_+-=[]{}|;:,.<>?) to the pool, raising entropy from about 5.95 to 6.46 bits per character with all sets on. They're off by default because some services restrict which symbols are allowed, and at the default length of 16, adding two more characters boosts entropy more than enabling symbols does.

Will every password include each character type I select?

▾

Not necessarily. Each character is drawn independently from the combined pool, so a short password can end up without a digit or symbol; if a site requires one of each, check the result and regenerate if needed.
