Hash Generator

Generate SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 hashes

About Hash Generator

Hashes any text with SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512 and shows the digest as lowercase hex, from 40 characters for SHA-1 up to 128 for SHA-512. Hashing uses the browser's Web Crypto API, so your input is never uploaded. Handy for verifying a string against a published digest, generating cache keys or reproducing values in test fixtures.

Frequently asked questions

Which algorithms are supported, and why not MD5?

▾

SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512, the digests the Web Crypto API provides. MD5 isn't offered because Web Crypto doesn't implement it; both MD5 and SHA-1 have practical collision attacks, so prefer SHA-256 or stronger for anything security-related.

Can I reverse a hash?

▾

No. Hashing is a one-way function by design; you can only check a candidate by hashing it and comparing the output. Common or short inputs can still be found with precomputed tables, so store passwords with a salted, deliberately slow algorithm such as bcrypt or Argon2 rather than a plain SHA hash.

Why doesn't my hash match the one from the command line?

▾

The text is hashed exactly as typed, encoded as UTF-8, including spaces and line breaks. The echo command adds a trailing newline, so compare with printf or echo -n; line breaks in the input box are hashed as LF, never CRLF.

What is SHA-512 useful for?

▾

It belongs to the same SHA-2 family as SHA-256 but produces a 512-bit digest with a larger security margin. On 64-bit CPUs without SHA-256 hardware acceleration it is often faster than SHA-256, and SHA-384 is a truncated variant of it.
