Frequently asked questions

What is Base64 encoding?

Base64 represents binary data using 64 printable ASCII characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, +, /). It's used to safely embed binary content in text channels like JSON payloads, data URIs, and email attachments.

What's the difference between Standard and URL-safe Base64?

Standard Base64 uses + and / which have special meaning in URLs. URL-safe Base64 replaces them with - and _ so the output is safe in URLs and filenames without percent-encoding.

Why does Base64 output end with = signs?

Padding characters make the output length a multiple of 4. One = means one byte of padding was added; == means two. Some implementations omit padding — both are valid.

Does Base64 encrypt my data?

No. Base64 is encoding, not encryption. Anyone with the encoded string can decode it instantly. Never use it to secure sensitive data — use proper encryption (AES, RSA) instead.
