About Text Stats
Shows eight live metrics for any text you paste or type: characters with and without whitespace, words, lines, paragraphs, sentences, and estimated reading and speaking time. Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line, and a trailing newline adds one more line to the line count. Useful for checking blog post length, meta descriptions, commit messages or talk scripts.

How is word count calculated?

Words are the chunks of text separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks, so a hyphenated term like well-known counts as one word, and numbers or standalone symbols such as a dash count as words too.
How is reading time estimated?

Reading time divides the word count by 200 words per minute and speaking time by 130, each rounded to the nearest minute with a minimum of 1 minute. Dense technical text or code usually takes longer than the estimate.
How are sentences counted?

Each run of ., ! or ? ends a sentence, and text without final punctuation still counts as one. Abbreviations such as e.g. and decimals like 3.14 therefore add extra sentences, so treat the number as an estimate.
Why is the character count higher than the characters I see?

Characters are counted as JavaScript string length (UTF-16 code units), so most emoji count as 2 or more and every line break counts as 1. Characters (no spaces) leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks.
