Why convert CSV to Excel instead of just opening it directly?

Opening a CSV in Excel directly can misinterpret data — phone numbers lose leading zeros, dates get auto-formatted, and large numbers switch to scientific notation. Converting preserves the original values.
Why are my numbers stored as text?

Every cell is written as text, which is what keeps leading zeros, long IDs and dates intact, but it also means SUM and similar functions skip numeric-looking cells until they're converted. Use VALUE or Text to Columns on those columns first.
Can I use semicolons instead of commas?

No. Fields are split only on commas, so a semicolon- or tab-separated file usually ends up with each whole line in a single cell. Switch the delimiter to commas first, keeping in mind that quoted cells can't span multiple lines.
Why do accented characters look garbled after loading a file?

Loaded files are decoded as UTF-8. If letters like é turn into �, the CSV was saved in another encoding such as Windows-1252; save it again as CSV UTF-8 and reload it, or paste the text instead.
