Frequently asked questions
What is a blend mode?
▾
A blend mode is a mathematical formula that determines how a layer's pixels interact with the pixels below it. Used in Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, CSS, and every major graphics tool.
What is the difference between Multiply and Screen?
▾
Multiply darkens — white is transparent and black stays black, like stacking transparencies. Screen brightens — black is transparent and white stays white, like projecting light. They are mathematical inverses of each other.
What does Overlay do?
▾
Overlay is a combination of Multiply and Screen: dark base pixels use Multiply (gets darker), light base pixels use Screen (gets brighter). This increases contrast while preserving the base layer's highlights and shadows.
